Nyerere National Park – A Legacy of Wilderness and Conservation
OVERVIEW
Formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park is one of the largest protected wildlife areas in Africa. It was officially designated as a national park in 2019 and named after Julius Nyerere, the founding father of Tanzania.
The park is part of the Selous ecosystem, which has long been recognized for its rich biodiversity and vast, untouched landscapes. The Selous Game Reserve itself was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, highlighting its global ecological importance.
Nyerere offers a unique safari experience, with a combination of river, walking, and classic game drives. The Rufiji River, which flows through the park, creates a dynamic environment supporting large populations of elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and a wide variety of birdlife.
Unlike more crowded parks in the north, Nyerere remains relatively remote and less visited, making it ideal for travelers seeking a more exclusive and authentic connection with nature.
